So how do you Find a Winning Niche To Write About?
Follow these 4 straightforward steps:
1. You need to brainstorm an audience. You can do this in several ways:
- First choose an audience that you yourself represent (for example, university students between 18 – 25 years old, or middle-aged professionals)
- Perhaps choose an audience towards whom you gravitate (in other words, people you enjoy hanging out with).
- You can also choose to work backwards, by picking a niche topic that interests you first. This could involve picking a niche like “cures for hangovers”, then doing research on sites like Quantcast to figure out the dominant groups of people who are looking for cures for hangovers.
2. Identify the most pressing problems your niche audience has. This would involve doing research into the challenges, problems, pain points, desires and aspirations that your niche audience has. There are lots of places online that you can find this information, including how-to websites, niche forums, "trend" websites and popular blogs.
3. Select the most profitable problems. All problems are not created equal. Some problems your audience may happily pay to solve while others will be harder to sell. It's important to understand the difference, and for this, you can use “filters” such as:
- The total number of monthly searches related to a problem
- The total number of searches that imply intent to solve that problem
- The stability of search terms related to that problem
- The volume of good-quality, free information on the Web
4. You need to deeply understand profitable problems. It’s not nearly enough to simply know that, for example, students between 18 and 25 are looking for hangover cures. You need to find out who they are, male or female or both, also, exactly they want in hangover cures, and what problems they are having with current hangover cures. There’s more to it than simply finding a cool niche, however. You also need to understand the language they use to describe their idea of an ideal solution, so you can echo that language back to them in your sales copy, ad page copy, etc.
Summing Up
If you are really sick of playing “affiliate pinball”, you need to take a giant step back and deeply re-assess your strategy for building a sustainable online business.
This strategy is starting to work well for me (and lots of other world-class companies) The real trick, is to choose a particular niche audience to serve, then dive in headlong, and understand that audience’s problems clearly. By doing this, a new world of profitable opportunities will soon start opening up to you!
Best of luck,
Andre'
